Take a Break. Your Business Will Thank You
Doing pretty much anything other than working makes you better at your job, research finds.
If you’re an artist with a full-time job — as most of us are — you’re probably always struggling to carve out time to work on your craft. But the truth is: Your art is making you better at your job.
That’s because workers who take time off to relax or focus on other pursuits outside of work are actually better at their jobs when they return.
Recent research suggests that managers who disconnected from their jobs while at home felt more refreshed the next day, identified as effective leaders, and helped their employees stay on target better than bosses who spent their off hours worrying about work, according to researchers whose study was recently published in the Journal of Applied Psychology.
This was especially true of less-experienced leaders who were even more prone to being less effective if they didn’t get a break from thinking about work in off hours.
Managers who mentally and technologically disconnected from work at night were able to re-energize and more effectively lead teams the next day. They also reported being better at motivating and guiding their employees. This suggests that when you spend time working on your artwork or handmade business, you’re actually improving your work
So, make some art this weekend…your boss will thank you.
